President Chakwera today presided over the launching of the US$350 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact 2 which is also known as Malawi Transport and Land Compact at Mzonde Ground in the area of Senior Chief Kalolo in Lilongwe paving way for major infrastructure developments across the country.
Malawi’s second compact was signed on September 28, 2022. The compact aims to improve rural access to markets through road corridor development and road maintainance reforms and to improve land administration and the productive use of land while driving inclusive economic growth.
The 67km stretch from Chikwawa (Rumphi) to Euthini (Mzimba), 88 kms from Mkanda (Mchinji) to Mwase / Linga (Kasungu) and another 53kms in Lilongwe from Chileka to Chigwirizano via Phiri la Njuzi and Malingunde are the roads earmarked construction under the compact.
In the Eastern Region, the 79km stretch from Chamtulo in Mangochi (off Golomoti to Monkey Bay road) to Mkutumula near Balaka Market in Ntcheu will also be upgraded.
Once finalized, the upgraded roads will help facilitate improved flow of agricultural products from farms all the way to selling points.
