51 inmates out of 97 who sat for the 2023 Malawi School Certificate of Education ( MSCE) have passed with the highest scoring 17 points
The highest scoring candidate is Paul Isaab Tembo from Maula prison in Lilongwe.
A female inmate from Mzuzu prison Yvonne Kalimona has made history for being the first female to score 21 points.
Another prisoner from Zomba Central Prison Kawedi Shaban has scored the highest with 22 points.
Spokesperson for Malawi Prison Service ( MPS ) Chimwemwe Shawa has told us in an interview that what is encouraging is that majority of inmates who have passed have very few years before end of their sentences.
Said Shawa: ” We are encouraging them to apply for university entrance exams because most of them will be finishing their sentences shortly.”
This year,out of the 154 132 candidates who sat for the MSCE Examination, 83 846 passed, representing a 54.40 percent pass rate.
