Gogo Mlewa tributes pour in after actress dies aged 90

Malawi is paying tribute to Gogo Mlewa, following the death of the veteran actress at the age of 90.

Gogo Mlewa, real-name, Leya Ketrina Aziyele Mlewa, died peacefully in Lilongwe after a long illness.

She became very famous in 2020, because of her trending comedy skits with her Nephew, Yona Kanga-Kantwera.

Her very first video clip was about an English Premier League result when Chelsea Football Club lost a game and in the clip Gogo Mlewa was asking her nephew, _”Wapagolo anali kuti”_ [where was the goalkeeper when Chelsea conceded the goals]?



Following the announcement of her death on Tuesday night, Malawians have been posting on social media in reaction to the sad news.

Renowned poet Sylvester Kalizang’ona described Gogo Mlewa as a wonderful person who had strong passion for comedy
“Actress GOGO MLEWA (90yrs) was a wonderful person, and will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace Gogo.”

Stand-up Comedian Andrea Thonyiwa popularly know as Mr Jokes wrote,” Sad News! GOGO MLEWA is no more! May her soul rest in peace.”

Jamil Sheriff Chikakukua aka ‘Che Mandota’ said Gogo Mlewa will always be remembered for her passion in acting as she continued to entertain people even during her sickness.

Another popular comedian Tana Mr Broken English wrote, “This is very sad. I was a fan of her skits and we planned to do something together through her director John Nguluwe, My condolences to her family. She was an amazing character, Rest in peace Gogo.”

Born on 20th October, 1932, Gogo Mlewa, was one of the members of Lumbadzi CCAP Women’s Guild and talented in composing songs and stage drama.
