President Lazarus Chakwera through his Presidential Charity Initiative (PCI) on Wednesday, 14th June, 2023 donated a total of K120 million to 427 needy university students from 6 public universities of MUBAS, LUANAR, MZUNI, UNIMA, MUST, and KUHES to help them settle their fees and access to some necessities in pursuing their education.
Making the donation at a ceremony that took place at Kamuzu Palace in the Capital Lilongwe, President Chakwera said good start is a greatest gift that one can give out, adding that having potential or skill is not enough if there is no one to offer support, resources, freedom, and encouragement to get started.
“So the reason I have made this donation of money from my charity to support needy students is not just because I see their potential and talent, but because I know that what young people need in this country is the necessary support for them to get started on their journey towards self actualization”. Said President Chakwera.
However, President Chakwera said the resources are not sufficient, hence a need to hold hands in coming up with other initiatives in order to sustain the education of the needy students.
He then commended the leadership of MUST for taking an initiative towards assisting needy students in their funding, urging other public universities to emulate what MUST has done which he said is inline with vision 2063.
Meanwhile, President Chakwera has disclosed that this year his charity will spearhead another initiative to raise more resources because he knows better how big the need is, saying such donation is an investment that will be a game changer in the livelihood of the beneficiaries for strengthening their capacity and national building.
Each of the six universities went away with a cheque worth K20 million.
