Universal Industries Limited fined K4 million over unlawful waste matter discharge

The National Water Resource Authority (NWRA) has issued a fine of K4 million to Universal Industries Limited(UIL) for unlawful discharging of waste matter into Malangalanga Stream, a tributary of Lilongwe river.

This follows an impromptu inspection at the company’s premises by the NWRA aimed at establishing the source of unlawful discharge of effluent into the aforementioned stream which was detected by the authority’s inspectors.



In an interview with local media, Masozi Kasambala, the Public Relations Officer of NWRA, confirmed the imposition of the fine on Universal Industries Limited.

According to Kasambala, the company is required to pay the fine to the Authority by August 10, 2023.

Additionally, Kasambala stated that the company has been instructed to make temporary arrangements with the Lilongwe City Council or find a service provider to collect and properly dispose of their liquid waste at designated sites.

Meanwhile, Universal Industries Limited officials are yet to respond on the matter.
