A 45-year-old Godfrey Chirombo has on Tuesday reported died after a mine collapsed on him at Chithimbiri River in Kasungu where he went to dig gold with his son.
Confirming the news to 247 Malawi News, Kasungu Police spokesperson Joseph Kachikho said the son left his father to attend to other things.
At a distance, he reportedly saw that a hole shaft which his father was using had fallen.
Kachikho added that the son then called for help from well-wishers who came to rescue his father but their efforts proved futile as the body was found lifeless.
“The matter was reported to Ndonda Police Unit and in accompany of a medical personnel, we visited the scene where post-mortem results revealed that death was due to suffocation,”said Kachikho.
Chirombo hailed from Maluzi Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Kapichira in the district.
