In exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 92(1) as read with section 94(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has on Saturday appointed Simplex Chithyola Banda as Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs.
Chithyola-Banda replaces former Finance Minister, Sosten Alfred Gwengwe,who has now been appointed Minister of Trade and Industry.
According to a statement signed by Colleen Zamba, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, the appointments are with immediate effect.
Accepting the shift, Gwengwe said he will work with the current Minister.
“My comment would be Its one government and we will always work together,” he said.
In an interview with Nation Online, the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) stated that the changes are for the benefit of the country.
He said : “Nothing has necessitated changes in the cabinet. As you know the president has powers conferred upon him in the constitution of Malawi.
” It is not a new thing to see this happening, its just a matter of putting things in the right direction for the benefit of the country.
“So indeed the Malawi leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has made Hon.Simplex Chithyola Banda, Minister of Finance and Hon Sosten Gwengwe Minister of Trade.
Until his appointment, Chithyola-Banda was serving as Minister of Trade and Industry.
