A team comprising officials from Clooney Foundation on Friday 17 November, 2023 held a meeting with Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.
Clooney Foundation for Justice was established in late 2016 by George and Amal Clooney to advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world.
Speaking while welcoming the officials, led by Ms. Amal Clooney on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York two months ago, Chakwera said was delighted to welcome the Clooney Foundation team to Kamuzu Palace describing the trip as fruitful and productive.
“More significantly, I am so inspired by the international support that Malawi has with respect to gender justice that I wish to take advantage of this occasion to announce the renewal of Malawi’s goal of ending the practice of child marriage by 2030. This may sound like a goal too ambitious, but for the millions of girls in our country, this is already a goal too far away,” he said.
The president said cannot accept that by the end of this decade, the practice of marrying underage girls should still exist anywhere within borders with impunity.
