UNHCR praises Malawi for promoting Sustainable development goals

The United High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has extended its utmost gratitude to the Government of Malawi for the unwavering support towards initiatives that contribute to the noble Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UNHCR says education, a fundamental right, lies at the heart of SDG 4 aiming to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all saying Government’s endorsement and backing of activities aimed at realizing this goal are pivotal in paving the way for a brighter and more equitable future.

Speaking on Friday at the graduation ceremony of 186 students who have completed takenoLAB’s Malawi Digital Program in ICT trainings held at DAPP Teacher’s Training College in Dowa district, UNHRR’s Education Officer Priscilla Kalumo, encouraged the graduands to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence saying the world around them is constantly evolving, presenting new challenges and opportunities.

Kalumo said success is not handed out freely but it is earned through dedication, creativity, and an open mind, urging them to embrace this ever-changing world with creativity, adaptability and an eagerness to learn.

She said graduands should always remember that the opportunities they seek might not always be readily available hence they often require determination and competitive spirit offering her sincerest congratulations on their journey that has been filled with challenges yet their determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to their dreams.

“You stand as a testament to the power of resilience and dedication, you have not only hold on to your dreams but acted upon them, turning aspirations into tangible achievements,” said Kalumo.

In her remarks, takenoLAB’s Digital Malawi Project Team Leader Deborah Ntakirutimana, expressed her deepest appreciation to the UNHRC whose partnership has been instrumental in fostering an environment of learning and growth.

Ntakirutimana said the support from the UNHCR has not only enriched the educational experience to the students but has also contributed to the broader mission of empowering individuals through technology.

She also expressed her gratitude to the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) for its significant role in promoting public-private collaboration in the education through funding Refugee Led Organizations (RLO).

Speaking at the same auspicious occasion, District Director of Youth and Sports in the Ministry of Education-Dowa District Council Christopher Kumikundi, thanked takenoLAB for integrating refugees and the host community in offering ICT trainings describing this as very commendable.

Kumikundi said takenoLAB is complimenting government efforts of providing ICT trainings to the youths saying it is the wish of the Dowa District Council to see to it that many people in the district have opportunities to access ICT knowledge which is being offered for free at takenoLAB.

“We want to have many young ladies and men access ICT knowledge and skills being impacted by takenoLAB for 100 percent free, this is an added advantage to all the youths of Dowa,” he said.

TakenoLAB, is an organization implementing Malawi Digital Program based at Dzaleka Refugee Camp-Lilambwe village in the area of Senior Chief Msakambewa -shaping a brighter future of the Dowa youth by training them in Website development.
