President of the world football governing body FIFA Gianni Infantino has congratulated the newly-elected Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya.
In a letter dated December 17, 2023 and addressed to Haiya, Infantino says knowledge and leadership,passion and experience of Haiya will undoubtedly have an important impact of the development of the beautiful game in Malawi.
“Your knowledge and leadership, your passion and experience will undoubtedly have an important impact of the development of our beautiful game in Malawi.
“Convinced of the potential of football in the country, you can count on my personal support and help of Fifa to achieve this goal.
“The doors of Fifa are always open if you wish to discuss our sport, its development and the promotion of its values.”
Haiya floored Walter Nyamilandu with 23-10 votes in a highly emotional election on December 16, 2023 in Mzuzu; ending his 19-year-old era.
Among others, the new FAM President pledged to bring a more transparent and accountable leadership especially on FAM finances.
Again, Haiya, who has since resigned as Super League of Malawi(SULOM) President, also wants to invest more in players’ welfare and exports.
