Malawi National Spelling Bee and Good Neighbors Malawi on Friday signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) that will see the two organizations working together in promoting educational standards and improving literacy levels in the country through the Spelling Bee competitions.
Speaking during the partnership signing ceremony in Lilongwe, Malawi National Spelling Bee country director Lewis Mbaula said the partnership deal will enable his organisation reach out to children in hard to reach areas of Lilongwe and Kasungu where Good Neighbours is implementing its programmes.
“Spelling Bee competition enhances the reading culture, build vocabulary and confidence in children and also provides opportunities and exposure to the children. It has always been our wish to reach children in such areas and this is a great gesture,” he said.
Good Neighbours country director Gyo Jin Joo said about 200 children in the communities where the organisation is implementing its programmes will benefit.
“We have children’s clubs in communities and we want to provide an opportunity for exposure, motivation and fun.
“The two-year monetary support is subject to extension as we want to reach as many children as possible,” she said.
Approximately 10 000 to 15 000 children participate in the National Spelling Bee competition every year in 19 districts of the country except Likoma, Nkhotakota,Thyolo, Mwanza and Rumphi.
