Vendors based at Tsoka Market in Lilongwe have threatened to take unspecified action if Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) will continue imposing a ban on the secondhand underwear clothes.
In 2022, the MRA imposed A ban on the importation of the second hand clothes particularly underwears saying these clothes are contributing to outbreak of skin deaeses in the county.
However, Chairperson for Tsoka flea market Steven Magombo insists this saying that there is no evidence that second hand clothes contribute to transmission of skin deases because they clean them with washing powder before put them on sale.
Magombo wonders why MRA imposes the ban without the knowledge of the vendors.
“There is no way to ban such clothes because currently no evidence that show thar they contribute to the transmission of skin deases, and we believe that the move by MRA is to interfere our business,” says Magombo.
MRA officials denied to comment on the matter.
Some few weeks ago, Tsoka flea market Vendors staged a strike and stormed MRA offices to deliver their petition.
