Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) expresses great concern over the planned industrial action by some health care workers scheduled to take place on 10th June, 2024.
MHEN says as Chair of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) they have fears that the planned industrial action will affect the most underprivileged poor Malawians whose access to essential health services will be denied.
In a press statement released on 6th June, 2024 signed by MHEN Executive Director, George Jobe, says they have followed unfolding events surrounding the event and they are pleading with concerned parties to better resolve the matter before the industrial actions for the best interest of recipients of health care in Malawi.
“In our desperation to mediate and act for the underprivileged and vulnerable Malawians recepients of care/patients, we reached out and requested for round table discussion with the ministry of health, ministry of finance, National Organization of Nurses and Midwives (NONM) and Physicians Assistants Union of Malawi (PAUM) to take place on Friday, 7th June, 2024,” reads part of the statement.
However the meeting was turned down by some concerned parties, meanwhile the Attorney General has shown interest to take a step together with other concerned members on the issue, which MHEN appreciates the efforts.
MHEN therefore among others recommends appropriate discussions between the involved parties before the schedule industrial action and should industrial action happens, managers of public facilities should safe guard the right to life for everyone in particular vulnerable Malawian patients.
