Health workers to proceed with sit-in over unmet demands for higher allowances

By Chisomo Phiri

Health workers in the country say they will proceed with their sit-in  aimed at forcing the government to raise their special allowances.

According to David Chomba, President of the Physician Assistants Union of Malawi(PAUM) , the government has been non-committal to their demands, hence the sit-in.

Chomba has further accused the Ministry of Finance of frustrating the implementation of the allowances, despite the Ministry of Health finalizing the necessary paperwork.

He says if the government keeps on not  addressing their concerns, the health workers will continue with the industrial action, which will be done in phases.

Chomba says in the first phase, health workers will only attend to emergency cases; thereafter, it shall be a total shutdown.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance have not yet commented on the matter.
