In a daring operation, police in Lilongwe have recovered 248 bags of stolen maize worth K9.9 million and arrested four suspects in connection with the theft.

The breakthrough comes after a group of 18 criminals attacked a farm in Mpingu on July 24, 2024, overpowering watchmen and making off with the staple grain.

According to authorities, the suspects, armed with unknown objects, invaded the farm at around 22:00 hours, tying up the watchmen before breaking into a warehouse and escaping with the maize.

The stolen bags, each weighing 50 kilograms, were later sold to a company within the capital city.

Detectives launched a thorough investigation, which led to the arrest of four suspects on Monday, July 29, 2024. The suspects, identified as Lonjezo Landirani, 23, Geofrey James, 30, Lemison Cheza, 24, and Ahmad Wasili, 49, are expected to appear in court soon to face charges of Breaking and Theft.

The police have also launched a manhunt for the remaining 12 suspects, who are still at large.

The recovered maize has been returned to its rightful owner, bringing relief to the affected farmer.

The incident highlights the growing concern of farm thefts in the region, with criminals targeting vulnerable farms and warehouses.

The police have urged farmers to take extra precautions to secure their properties and report any suspicious activities.

In a statement, the police commended the swift action of the detectives, saying, “The recovery of the stolen maize and the arrest of the suspects demonstrate our commitment to combating crime and ensuring justice for victims.”

The four suspects hail from different districts, with Lonjezo Landirani and Geofrey James coming from Chiudza Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) M’bwatalika, Lilongwe; Lemison Cheza from Chilenga Village, T/A Msakambewa, Dowa; and Ahmad Wasili from Kapoloma Village, T/A Kapoloma in Machinga District.
