Umodzi party dismisses electoral rigging claims

By Chisomo Phiri

Tonse Alliance partner, Umodzi Party (UP) has  trashed claims by opposition political parties that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is being used by the governing Malawi Congress Party(MCP) to rig next year’s elections.

The opposition parties are arguing that MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and chief elections officer Andrew Mpesi are directly affiliated with MCP hence their operations cannot be trusted.

However,UP president Thomas Wezzi Kaumba says the opposition parties’ assertions do not add up.

Kaumba has therefore, urged the parties to focus on building the nation rather than destroying it through propaganda.

“I also urge MEC to continue upholding electoral laws for the goodness of the country,” he says.

Malawi will hold tripartite elections on September 16,2025.
