Malawi’s national football team, the Flames, on Monday secured their first win in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, defeating Burkina Faso 3-0 at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe.
The triumph comes after a series of disappointing results, including a 3-2 loss to Burundi and a 1-0 defeat to Senegal.
The Flames, already out of the running for the competition, showed remarkable determination, scoring their first goal in the first half through Gabadinho Mhango.
The team continued to press hard on the visitors in the second half, with Richard Mbulu doubling the lead and Lloyd Aaron sealing the deal with the third goal, earning Malawi their first three points.
The victory is the first for Malawi against Burkina Faso in all competitions.
Malawi have finished the qualifiers with four points from six matches, level with Burundi.
Senegal and Burkina Faso qualified for AFCON finals.
Monday’s victory marks a significant milestone for new coach Kalisto Pasuwa, who took the reins from Patrick Mabedi.
Pasuwa’s leadership has brought a renewed sense of hope to the team, despite their earlier struggles.
