Mutharika urges Nsanje residents to register and vote for change

By Burnett Munthali

Nsanje, Malawi – Former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has called on the residents of Nsanje District to register and vote in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that their participation is crucial in restoring the district’s lost glory.

Addressing a crowd at Nsanje Boma, Mutharika criticized the current administration under President Lazarus Chakwera for neglecting the district and failing to address its pressing challenges. He assured the people that a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led government would prioritize development in Nsanje and the wider Lower Shire region.

“The people of Nsanje have endured enough suffering under this government. It is time to stand up, register, and vote for change. Together, we can rebuild the district and bring back its dignity,” Mutharika said.

Mutharika highlighted the progress made during his tenure, citing significant infrastructure and development projects initiated under his leadership, including:

The Nsanje Inland Port: A key project aimed at boosting trade and economic activity in the region.

Flood Mitigation Measures: Efforts to address perennial flooding issues in the Shire Valley.

Agricultural Investments: Support for farmers through subsidies and irrigation schemes.

He lamented that these projects have stalled or been mismanaged under the current administration, leaving the people of Nsanje vulnerable and neglected.

Mutharika pledged to revitalize development projects in Nsanje if elected next year, with a focus on:

Rehabilitating the Nsanje Inland Port to facilitate trade.

Improving road networks and other infrastructure in the district.

Strengthening agricultural support to enhance food security and boost incomes.

He urged residents to register during the ongoing voter registration exercise, noting that their votes hold the power to shape the district’s future.

The rally at Nsanje Boma marks the continuation of Mutharika’s grassroots campaign aimed at mobilizing support for the DPP ahead of next year’s elections. He encouraged supporters to remain vigilant and united in the fight for change, stressing that their collective action would determine the district’s destiny.

“We can only bring change if we work together. Register to vote, and let’s make Nsanje and Malawi great again,” he concluded.

With voter registration ongoing, Mutharika’s appeal is a timely reminder of the importance of active civic engagement as the nation prepares for a critical election.
