As Malawi gears up for its upcoming elections, Umunthu Lead, a youth-based organization in Mzuzu, is taking a proactive approach to ensure young people play a constructive role in promoting peace and security. According to Francis Kamlomo, Chairperson of Umunthu Lead, involving youth in policy implementation is crucial for achieving peace and unity, as well as contributing to the Malawi 2063 agenda.
To support this initiative, Umunthu Lead is organizing a fundraising Peace and Unity Run on January 18, which will pave the way for the Umunthu Conference on Peace and Unity. The event aims to bring together youth representatives and community leaders to empower young people and prevent their exploitation during elections.
Rejoice Banda, a member of Umunthu Lead, emphasized the importance of empowering youth, stating that they are often taken advantage of during elections. By providing a platform for young people to engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue, Umunthu Lead hopes to promote a culture of peace and unity in Malawi.
This initiative is particularly significant, given the crucial role young people play in shaping the country’s future. As noted in the ACE Electoral Knowledge Network, youth participation in political processes is essential for promoting peace, stability, and democratic governance.
