Two lives lost in separate road accidents in Mzuzu*

By Burnett Munthali

Two tragic road accidents in Mzuzu have claimed the lives of two individuals, leaving the community in shock and mourning. The incidents, which occurred on the same day, highlight the urgent need for road safety awareness and adherence to traffic regulations.

According to Cecilia Mfune, Deputy Spokesperson for Mzuzu Police, the first victim has been identified as Amon Mkandawire, a 45-year-old man. Mkandawire succumbed to his injuries at Mapale Health Centre following an accident at Lusangazi. The mishap involved a Toyota Isis Hatchback with registration number NN1184, which overturned while carrying seven passengers. Details surrounding the cause of the accident remain under investigation, but police suspect driver error and speeding may have contributed to the vehicle losing control.

In a separate and equally devastating incident, an unidentified female passenger lost her life along the Mzuzu/Kaviwale road in Area 4. This second accident has left authorities and residents concerned about the growing number of fatalities on the city’s roads.

Both accidents, which occurred yesterday, have prompted Mzuzu police to issue a stern reminder to drivers to exercise caution and adhere to all traffic regulations. “We are urging all motorists to drive responsibly, observe speed limits, and ensure that vehicles are roadworthy. Lives are being lost unnecessarily due to negligence and failure to follow traffic laws,” Mfune emphasized.

Road accidents remain a significant concern in Malawi, with many incidents attributed to reckless driving, speeding, and poorly maintained roads. These recent fatalities add to the alarming statistics of road-related deaths in the country, underscoring the need for collective efforts to improve road safety.

The loss of Amon Mkandawire and the unidentified female passenger has left their families and the Mzuzu community grappling with grief. The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of both accidents.

As Mzuzu mourns these tragic losses, the message from law enforcement is clear: road safety is a shared responsibility. Adhering to traffic regulations and practicing caution can save lives and prevent further tragedies on Malawi’s roads.
