Minister of Health and Population, Hon Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, MP , today, 31st March 2021 presided over the handover ceremony of 4 boats procured through UNICEF with the funding from the Global Alliance on Immunizations and Vaccines (GAVI).
The boats are aimed at strengthening the service delivery of immunization for lakeshore districts of Likoma, Rumphi, Nkhatabay and Mangochi.
In her remarks, Hon Chiponda who was accompanied by her deputy, Hon Chrissie Kalamula Kanyasho, MP said “the handover of these boats today, is a clear demonstration of true commitment by GAVI towards Malawi in preventing vaccine preventable illnesses and deaths among children.”
She further said “these boats will assist in transportation of all vaccines and various vaccine supplies, including the COVID 19 vaccine, to various hard to reach (by road) health centers that are situated along the lake”.
She therefore urged the people that are going to be using them to take good care of them by using them responsibly and for the intended purpose.
Hon Chiponda thanked GAVI and UNICEF for their continued support to the government in the fight against preventable disease in children.
The function was held in Nkhatabay.
