Mphonda calls for inclusion of youth, women and people with disabilities in September elections

By Burnett Munthali

The Governor of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Dedza District, Cornelius Mphonda, has called for the inclusion of young people, women, and people with disabilities in various leadership positions during the upcoming elections scheduled for September 16.

He emphasized that these groups must be given space and opportunities to participate meaningfully in the political process.

Speaking to Nation Online, Mphonda expressed concern that the country is still lagging behind when it comes to offering equal political opportunities to such marginalized groups.

He noted that despite their potential and abilities, youth, women, and people with disabilities are often sidelined in the political arena.

He stated, “These people are just like anyone else, but what they lack is an opportunity and the necessary support to enable them to take part in national elections.”

Mphonda stressed that providing access to political participation is a fundamental right that should be extended to all citizens regardless of their background or physical condition.

He further explained that the delay by the DPP in conducting primary elections in Dedza was partly an intentional move to create room for broader participation by underrepresented groups.

According to him, the postponement of internal elections was meant to open up the democratic space and ensure that individuals from all walks of life get a fair chance to compete for party positions.

He reiterated that the DPP in Dedza was expected to hold primary elections in various areas of the district on the 23rd of last month.

However, as of now, it remains unclear when exactly these internal elections will be held.

Mphonda insisted that this uncertainty should not be misinterpreted as disorganization within the party but rather as a sign of ongoing internal consultations and preparations aimed at inclusivity.

He concluded by urging all political stakeholders to consider the value of diversity in leadership and to intentionally support structures that allow for meaningful participation of every citizen in democratic processes.
