Old Mutual (Blantyre) Foundation Trust and partner Care Malawi has commenced a construction project worth MK108 million of primary school blocks and administration offices at various schools in Malawi starting with Mkanda Primary School in Mchinji. This is in a bid to retain children in school and improve their attendance.

Speaking Wednesday during the site handover where the structures will be built, Care Malawi Senior Programme Manager, Anderson Kumpolota, said the organisation was implementing the project dubbed ‘Protect the future: ending child labour in the agriculture industry in Malawi (PROCLAIM)’.The project aims at eliminating child labour in the agriculture industry by withdrawing children from estates and re-enrolling them into primary schools.“The project is targeting 60 schools in Mchinji, benefitting 63,110 children in the process.

Among other interventions, the project safeguards the right to education for children by improving their attendance, retention and performance for those at risk and withdrawn from child labour,” he explained.District Education Manager (DEM) for Mchinji, Nellie Kamtedza, said the construction of the classroom block would address the shortage of classrooms at the school.“Mchinji is grappling with serious classroom shortages, especially at primary level. We, therefore, commend Care Malawi and Old Mutual Trust for the donation,” she said.

Apart from Mchinji District, Care Malawi is also implementing the PROCLAIM Project in Ntchisi.
