Ministry of agriculture has advised farmers in the country to store their farm produce appropriately to avoid post-harvest losses that happens when grain is not stored properly.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson Gracian Lungu, 10-15% of harvests get lost every year due to poor storage management.

‘‘We mostly lose around 10-15% of the national harvest due to poor management, therefore our ministry has been promoting some of the storage technologies that will allow farmers to keep their grain for a long time,’’ said Lungu.

Lungu said some of the technologies are thematic bags, which are mostly sold on the Malawian markets.

‘‘ we have been promoting this technology, as it has proved to be one of the easiest and good storage technology, yes they can be expensive at the onset of buying , but the good thing is that the bag can be used for 2 to 3 years, added Lungu.

He further said they have also been encouraging farmers to use pesticides to keep their grain.
