The official celebration for the Queen’s Birthday Party and Platinum Jubilee took place in Malawi took place on Wednesday evening. Malawi’s foreign affairs Minister Nancy Tembo and British High Commissioner David Beer led the celebrations
Speaking during the event in Lilongwe, British High Commissioner David Beer said the UK is determined to play its part in helping solve some of Malawi’s challenges but that will need hard work and brave choices.
“We commend the recent – necessary – macro-economic decisions by Government in order to address debt and foreign exchange challenges. And we stand with Malawi as it makes the further structural reforms required to set the macro-economy on a sustainable footing.
Once this is in place, we believe there are tremendous opportunities in Malawi to attract foreign investment – which is the engine of growth and which will provide the foreign exchange, jobs and tax revenue that will guarantee Malawi’s future prosperity. In order to do so, Malawi needs to become competitive with its resurgent regional peers in the eyes of investors,” said Beer.
In her speech Malawi’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo said The UK has been a reliable partner to Malawi for the long-term assistance and partnership in the areas of good governance, health, education and economic empowerment, amongst others.
“In order to accelerate poverty alleviation and promote sustainable development, the Malawi Government is committed to strengthen measures which ensure that resources whether generated locally or received from our partners are used for their intended purpose. The government is committed to addressing corruption and restore discipline in the civil service.” – said Tembo
