Lilongwe, Blantyre schools re-open next week

The Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 and Cholera has announced that schools in Lilongwe and Blantyre cities, which remain closed due to the cholera outbreak, will open next week Tuesday
January 17, 2023.

Co-chairperson of the committee who is also Minister of health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda disclosed this during a media briefing in Lilongwe on Thursday January 12,2023.

Chiponda, who was accompanied by other cabinet ministers such as Abida Sidick Mia of Water and Sanitation, Gospel Kazako of Information and Agness Nyalonje of Education, said, so far, measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of the disease in schools.

She said for instance, the taskforce has banned the sell of food within school premises and that all schools have been provided with chlorine to help in disinfection



On her part, Minister of water and sanitation Abida Mia disclosed out of the required 20 billion kwacha to help in containing the outbreak, the country has received 14 billion kwacha from donor partners.

On January 2,2023, the government through the presidential task force on corona virus and cholera directed that schools in Blantyre and Lilongwe should not open as planned, due to escalating cholera cases and deaths in the two cities.
