Two men have drowned in Kawanda River at Enukweni township in Mzimba District after a vehicle they were travelling in got stuck in mud which led to the vehicle overturning due to increased pressure of running water.
According to Mzuzu Police Station Assistant Public Relations Officer, Mercy Chitonde, the deceased were in the company of five other people and were going to Chimfwansala village for field work.
Chitonde added that on their way, heavy rains started and upon reaching Kawanda River, they attempted to cross it before it filled up, but eventually got stuck.
“Four people managed to escape and the remaining two drowned,” said Chitonde.
He said currently, one of the deceased has been taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital for postmortem and the other person is still missing.
