We are all witnesses of seasonal and time changes, but one thing which has remained unchanged is the resoluteness of President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to root out corruption from the face of Malawi.
Chakwera’s decision to convene an interagency meeting is one of many examples of his determination in the fight against the vice.
On Wednesday, the Malawi leader invited the Secretary to the President and the Cabinet Colleen Zamba, the Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, the Director of Public Prosecution Masauko Chamkakala and the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Ms. Martha Chizuma at Kamuzu Palace.
According to President Chakwera’s twitter page, the four leaders were summoned to remind them the need of collaborative efforts in the battle against corruption.
‘’I convened an interagency meeting yesterday and reminded them to collaborate in the fight against corruption. I urged Minister of Justice, SPC, AG, DPP, and DG of ACB to be guided by the sovereign administrative and legal statutes above anything else,’’ read the tweet.
As the saying goes that a stitch in time saves nine, President Chakwera’s decision to bring together heads of these agencies is a good thing which will salvage what is left of the fight against graft because there has been little progress in recent times in as far as the anti-graft fight is concerned as some of these agencies were at loggerheads.
According to media reports, there was bad blood between the former DPP Steve Kayuni and Ms. Chizuma and they could not see eye to eye, a development which almost choked the war on corruption. Now that Kayuni is out of the picture and the coming in of Chamkakala coupled with what seems to be the recommissioning of these people to go and fight corruption by President Chakwera, Malawians will see a more coordinated approach to the fight against corruption.
