Fake soldier arrested in Mangochi

A 35-year-old woman identified as Memory Chokhotho is in police custody in Mangochi on allegations that she was impersonating a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier.

It is reported that Mangochi Police traffic officers on Monday morning, while executing their duties at Chimwala Roadblock, stopped a Toyota Passo, registration number BX4881, which was coming from the direction of Mangochi Boma heading towards Liwonde.

“Whilst checking, the officers noted a military jacket which the suspect hang on the passenger’s seat and upon being quizzed, Chokhotho lied that she works at Maritime base under the lntelligence Unit,” said Mangochi Police Spokesperson Amina Daudi.

Daudi said after making enquiries at Monkey-Bay Maritime Base, it was revealed that she does not working at the facility hence her arrest.

Later in the evening, a team of police officers, in conjunction with Monkey-Bay MDF soldiers took the suspect to her house at Maldeco Trading Centre where military camouflage uniform, including a sweater, UN medal, two MDF wrappers, MDF certificates, a drinking bottle and small axe were recovered.

The suspect was also found with two fake MSCE certificates and business certificates.

Currently, investigations are underway to establish the owner of the items she was using.
