The opposition Democratic Progressive Party DPP has distanced itself saying it will not recognise the shadow cabinet that was recently released by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon Kondwani Nankhumwa. This comes a day after UDF leader Atupele also bashed the shadow list saying his party was not consulted.
In a statement released by DPP and signed by the party’s Administrative Secretary Hon Francis Mphepo. it says DPP does not recoghnise the appointment of a shadow cabinet in the national assembly. Mphepo in his statement argued that the leadership of the party was not consulted
“The DPP leadership was not consulted in the appointment of the said shadow cabinet and those appointed inthe shadow cabinet have no authroity whatsoever to speak on behalf of the DPP in the national assembly “
Mphepo said his party believes that a shadow cabinet serves no purpose in a hybrid government system of President and Parliamentary System practices in Malawi. The party says it will therefore only present its position on specific matters in the National Assembly through its Parliamentary Spokespersons.
United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has also distanced his party from Leader of Opposition Nankhumwa’s shadow cabinet, saying it was done without consultation. In a message on Facebook, Atupele said he just learnt of the appointment through social media that it includes UDF Members of Parliament. “I wish this was done in consultation with the UDF leadership,” he said in his short statement.
