Andrew “Andy” Simkonda, Former Moyale Barracks Captain, Dies at 38

The former Moyale Barracks captain Andrew Simkonda has died

According to a statement from the club, Simkonda has passed away at the age of 38. He died Wednesday night at Chitipa District Hospital following a brief illness.

His brother, Gustin Simkonda, confirmed the sad news to Moyale Barracks Sports. He stated that Andy was rushed to the hospital yesterday, where he was later pronounced dead due to low blood sugar.

Andy Simkonda was a vital player during his time at Moyale Barracks. On December 31, he scored a hat trick in a 5-0 victory against Embangweni at Mzuzu Stadium. A month later, on January 28, he netted two goals in a 2-1 triumph over Wanderers.

Beyond club football, Andy made a mark on the international stage. In 2009, he played a pivotal role for the Malawi Under-17 national team, scoring five goals against Namibia to help the team qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

He will be laid to rest tomorrow Friday at his home village, Ipenza, under Traditional Authority Kameme in Chitipa.
