Also, UNESCO, a big group that works to help instruction and culture around the world, chose April 23rd to celebrate books and writers during their General Conference in Paris in 1995.
World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.
The World Book Day books are a gift to children from booksellers and publishers. World Book Day works with publishers to create a list of £1 books to appeal to a wide range of children at all ages, interests, and stages of reading. Publishers suggest titles and a selection panel chooses from these submissions.
