Seven people have died, while others have sustained various injuries, after the vehicle they were traveling in was involved in a road accident near Sharma’s Residence along Chileka Road in Blantyre.
Ndirande Police Public Relations Officer(PRO) Maxwell Jailosi has told 247 Malawi News that the incident occurred on October 7, 2024 when a motor vehicle, registration number DZ 7873, a Toyota Dyna two-tonner lorry, was traveling from Magalasi Roundabout along Chileka Road with 37 passengers on board.
Jailosi says after passing Sharma’s Residence, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and swerved to the far left side of the road, eventually hitting a tree.
He says as a result of the impact, seven female passengers sustained serious injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital(QECH) in Blantyre.
The identities of the victims are still unknown.
