Bon Kalindo arrested for defying bail conditions in the Albion killings claim case

Police have disclosed that they have arrested political activist Bon Kalindo in Lilongwe today following his failure to honour bail conditions in a case dating back to 2021, where he claimed in an interview with Rainbow Television that he had knowledge of people behind killings of persons with albinism, but could not mention their names.

Kalindo was arrested and charged with publishing false news likely to cause fear and public alarm before being granted bail.

However, in a statement made available to 247 Malawi News, National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya says one of the conditions for Kalindo’s bail was that he should be reporting to National Police Headquarters every fortnight and that Kalindo last honoured that condition on April 26 2023.

He says therefore, Kalindo is expected to be taken to court on Monday next week.

“Kalindo is now being asked questions.

“We will inform the public the police station he will be held later,” says Kalaya.

But when contacted earlier, Kalindo’s lawyer Stainly Chirwa observed that what has happened is unprocedural.

“But as a matter of procedure that is not supposed to happen. My client was supposed to be called to court , or to be summoned because he was on bail on same charge on which the police have obtained another warrant of arrest for him,” he said.

Kalindo leads a grouping of concerned citizens under the banner, Malawi First which is pushing for the resignation of President Lazarus Chakwera for his alleged failure to manage state affairs.
