As Malawi is approaching towards rainy season where cholera cases become high, Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) has urged authorities to immediately address the poor unhygienic conditions in the country’s cities, town markets and rivers so as to control the spread of the outbreak.

CAMA Director John Kapito has made the call through a statement issued on November 6,2023.

Says Kapito in a statement:”Recently, the country witnessed high numbers of deaths from Cholera as a result of poor Sanitation and unhygienic conditions of markets and neighbourhoods and rivers.

“Unfortunately, the unhygienic conditions are much worse than last year, so as we are approaching the rain season, we are appealing for authorities to take precautionary measures to avoid the unnecessary loss of life due to lack of planning.”

Kapito has further asked the Ministry of Health to collaborate with councils in eliminating sewer system leakages as well as ensuring that markets have adequate public toilet facilities and piped water.

“We are aware that Government is now providing vaccines against Cholera but the vaccine should not ignore basic health prevention measures against this deadly disease it is unfortunately that all health officials in both cities, towns and peri-urban areas have abandoned all preventative measures as we approach the rainy reason which is the most breeding time for cholera,” he adds.

CAMA is a membership non-Governmental Organization which was established in the country in 1994, and is a member of Consumer International, a world wide consumer federation.

The mandate of CAMA is to promote and protect consumer interests through policy advocacy and lobbying, conducting public awareness and education programmes and carrying out research on various cross-issues which have direct or indirect bearing on the consumer.
