The Association of the Diocesan Catholic Clergy of Mzuzu has called on President Dr.Lazarus Chakwera to step in and resolve the long-standing land dispute between the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and the people of Kasasire.
The dispute has led to the eviction of at least 800 people from Kasasire, which spans across Nkhata Bay district, northeast of Mzimba, and part of Rumphi East.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, chairperson of the association,Father Mark Mkandawire, emphasized the dire situation faced by the evicted individuals.

“These people lack basic necessities like shelter, food, and hygiene.
“It is heartbreaking to see them struggling to access justice,” said Mkandawire.
He revealed that discussions with the Presidency are ongoing, and they hope President Chakwera will take time to visit Kasasire during his stay in the North.
On his part, coordinator of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP),Felix Manda, echoed Mkandawire’s sentiments, stressing that the people of Kasasire deserve compensation and human dignity.
The association’s plea comes as the displacement of the Kasasire community continues to worsen, highlighting the need for urgent intervention.
