The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has emphasized the need for collective effort to address voter apathy as the nation prepares for the general elections on September 16, 2025.
CCJP observes that Malawi continues to struggle with voter apathy, referencing recent elections that show a decline in the number of registered voters casting their ballots.
In a statement,CCJP National Coordinator Boniface Chibwana, has urged the government and the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to handle electoral matters transparently ahead of the 2025 elections.
“In the 2019 general elections, although 6,859,570 individuals were registered, only 5,105,983 voted, representing a turnout of 74.43 percent.
“The 2020 fresh presidential election saw a further decline, with only 64.81 percent of registered voters participating.
“Subsequent by-elections in 2021 and 2022 showed even lower turnouts of 43.57 percent and 41.59 percent respectively,” reads part of the statement.
Meanwhile, the commission has challenged Malawians to engage actively in the electoral process to safeguard and strengthen democracy.
