People of Lilongwe City Centre Constituency under the leadership of President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera are all smiling following the ground breaking of fabulous Mvama Bridge which connects people of Senti and those from Bagdad.
Speaking during the ceremony Member of Parliament for the area Alfred Jiya commended the Malawi Leader for increasing the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) which is helping completion of development projects in his constituency.
Jiya said the bridge is so important because people have been losing lives when trying to cross the river.
He said this time around the priority is to concentrate on areas where there is a huge gap in terms of traveling from one place to another.
“This is why we intend to address the problem by constructing a bridge of high standard, which is more than what was here before with a capacity of carrying huge volumes of water passing through it. This is the bridge which will go a long, way in helping the people,” he said.
Honourable Jiya said people have been suffering from both sides of the bridge so the bridge will solve many problems which the community has been facing.
Jiya has since urged the community to own the project and ensure that no one is coming to steal construction materials.
Director of Engineering at the Lilongwe City Council Julius Tsogolani said the contractor has been given 90 days to complete the project.
Tsogolani has since advised the contractor to employ people from the area than importing labour from other places.
Chiefs in the area have since welcomed the project.
