President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Thursday 8th December, 2022 presided over the swearing in of four High Court Judges at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

The four justices are; Howard Brighton Pemba, Eddah Ngwira, Etness Chanza, and Allan Hans Muhome.

Speaking after the swearing – in ceremony, Chakwera said the new judges will help strengthen the country’s justice system.

The president also condemned the recent act of mob justice in Mzimba District where two elderly women were seriously assaulted by a mob for being suspected of witchcraft.

“Mob just is a crime and anyone who takes the law into their own hands will find themselves in the hands of the law,” he emphasized.

The Malawi leader noted that the spate of mob justice presents an opportunity for the country to build capacity of the judicial system so that it is trusted by all Malawians.

“The cry for justice is also an opportunity for us to satisfy that cry by strengthening the justice system’s institutions to the point that the public can trust that if anyone violates the rights of another, justice will be done swiftly, fairly and transparently,” he said.

He advised the judicial officers in the country to expedite delivery of justice to the public as one way of averting the vice.

The president said that society today is growing more desperate for justice and therefore, the judiciary must always do the right and do so quicker than before.

This is the second time Chakwera has sworn in new judges since he assumed office.
