Chilima says the ACB report does not present any detail of his alleged criminal conduct

Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima has expressed dismay over a report submitted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau(ACB) to President Lazarus Chakwera some few days ago which implicates him in a cobweb of corrupt act with businessperson Zuneth Sattar

Chilima’s reaction follows a report which ACB submitted to Chakwera, apparently alleging that there was a criminal conduct that he had a hand in.

In a statement Director of Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Pilirani Phiri says Chilima finds the manner in which the ACB has conducted itself very troubling.

Phiri adds that the bureau has in essence accused him of a crime without providing any particulars or evidence in support of the crime.

“The state Vice President finds it curious that, to date the bureau has not confronted him with the said allegations of criminal conduct so that he has the opportunity of making representations on the same, instead, a prejudicial one sided public narrative has been sustained for months now which has incited public anger against the so called “mentioned ” individuals who helplessly watch their lives being ruined as they wait for the opportunity to voice their side of the story. There is profound sense of justice that is entirely lacking in this approach ” ,says Phiri in a statement

Phiri further says the Vice President has stated that while the bureau’s efforts to fight corruption deserve the unwavering support of all well-deserved meaning Malawians, the fight must always be waged within the confines of the law.

“One requirement of the law is that every person must be presumed to be innocent until a competent court of law finds them guilty, and further that accusations of criminality should be made within the space of judicial proceedings. This ensures that the fight against corruption remains a noble enterprise and does not descend into a discredited paths of political witch-hunting”,.

Phiri further states that the state Vice President has stated that the entered public service to serve the interests of Malawians, and that at no point has ever been involved in any perverted or criminal scheme as suggested by the bureau or at all ; nor has he deployed the office to which the Malawians entrusted him with and aided any perverted or criminal scheme.

Meanwhile, the Vice President remains confident that any due process initiated to test the scurrilous allegations now made against him would vindicate the hope that Malawians placed in him and looks forward to the occasion.

On Tuesday night, President Lazarus Chakwera stripped of some delegated powers conferred on his vice until investigations on his alleged involvement in corrupt acts are concluded.
