Malawi Congress Party has elected Daniel Chitonya Mwanyongo to represent the party in Karonga North West Constituency during the forthcoming by-elections slated for March 30, 2021.
Announcing the results after primary elections which were held on Friday at Karonga Teachers Training Center hall, the presiding officer for the elections Hon. Maxwell Thyolera said Mwanyongo got 436 votes while his contender Abraham Mwakhwawa got 94 votes.
Speaking to this reporter in a phone interview after the elections, Thyolera described the process as free, fair and transparent, a statement which was echoed by the deputy regional chairperson for the North North region in the party Mr. Walusako Munde, but Mwakhwawa was not available for comment.
Thyolera further said the party is now geared for campaign in the remaining days to election and is hopeful of grabbing the seat from DPP which was holding it before the demise of its legislator James Bond Kamwambi.
There were 530 delegates who casted their votes with 2 aspirants tassling for the candidature in a secret ballot poll. reporting._*
