Malawi Police in the Capital Lilongwe are keeping a con man identified as Precious Kasakatiza, 22, who was operating various Facebook accounts and in the process duping innocent people of their hard-earned cash.
National Deputy Police Publicist, Alfred Chimthere, said the suspect is being kept in custody at Lingadzi Police Station and will answer charges of obtaining money by false pretence and defamation of character, among others.
Chimthere said Kasakatiza, who stays in area 36 in Lilongwe, has for the past months been running numerous fake Facebook accounts namely:
1-Queen Sagrada
2-Anzeru Akummawa
3-Princess Regina
4-Affordable steel roofing
5-Mr Praizs Muzik
6-Ndine Promoter
7-Chacha
8-Avon with Christabel
9-Infinity Modelling Agency
10-VJ Prestar
11-Bartell joy Mataya
He said apparently, using the above fake Facebook accounts he had swindled money from several people including men, who thought were dealing with a lady.
Chimthere said for instance the suspect used pictures of innocent women without their consent, to entice his unsuspecting male victims.
“Using our Cyber Security officers at National Police Headquarters, we instituted an investigation and cornered him,” said Chinthere.
Kasakatiza hails from Mackenzie village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.
Meanwhile, police have urged the public to desist from dealing with unknown people on social media.
