DPP amends application in National ID voter registration case

The former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has amended its application against the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) regarding the mandatory use of National Identity Cards (IDs) for voter registration.

This comes after the High Court and Supreme Court registrar rejected the DPP’s case, stating that proceeding with it would be an abuse of court processes.

In an interview, the DPP’s Secretary General, Peter Mukhito clarified that the party will now have individuals as plaintiffs.

He said the decision follows legal advice that the party’s rights cannot be infringed upon since it lacks the authority to register and vote.

“We requested to have individuals as plaintiffs, as it may carry more weight. We’ve rectified the error, refiled, and look forward to the full hearing in court,” Mukhito said.

The DPP’s initial application was rejected due to the party lacking the authority to register and vote.
