DPP denounces harassment of women in MCP attire, calls for swift sction against perpetrators

By Twink Jones Gadama

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has strongly condemned the harassment of women clad in Malawi Congress Party (MCP) attire in Blantyre, describing the act as “unacceptable” and “unjustifiable.” In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Shadrick Namalomba, the DPP emphasized that Malawi is a country that upholds civil rights and liberties, and it is the duty of the police to protect its citizens.

According to the DPP, the perpetrators of the harassment must be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. The party also drew attention to its own members who were hacked in Mponela, Mbowe, and Lilongwe Community Ground, stating that it awaits the perpetrators of those acts to be held accountable.

The DPP was categorical in stating that it does not condone any form of lawlessness, despite the MCP’s attempts to shift blame onto the DPP. Instead, the DPP argues that it is the MCP that should take accountability for creating an environment of intimidation and harassment towards those with differing opinions.

This assertion is supported by a recent statement from the Public Affairs Committee, which highlights the MCP’s role in perpetuating a culture of violence and intolerance. The DPP’s statement serves as a strong condemnation of such actions and a call to action for the authorities to take decisive measures against the perpetrators.

The incident in question has sparked widespread outrage, with many Malawians taking to social media to express their disgust and concern. The DPP’s statement is seen as a welcome move, as it acknowledges the severity of the situation and calls for swift action.

As the country prepares for the September 2025 elections, the DPP’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding civil rights and liberties. The party’s call for swift action against the perpetrators of the harassment is a step in the right direction, and it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to this incident.
