DPP Struggles to follow democratic principles – Former Minister claims

By Durrell Namasani

Former Minister of Information in the DPP government who is also a member of parliament for Zomba Chisi Mark Botomani has criticized his former party of failing to honour and adhere to the democratic principles in the way the party is run.
Mark Botomani was reacting to the events that led to his expulsion from the party a year ago and the current tendency where the party leader can change party position holders even when they were elected at the convention.

Mark Botomani was one of DPP giants who found themselves on the wrong side of the party leader and was expellled from the party after a disciplinary review last year. Botomani together with other senior members Kondwani Nankhumwa and Greselder Jeffrey and 9 others were removed from the party.

The 11 were accused of undermining Mutharika’s authority and disrespecting party leadership contrary to Article 6 of the DPP constitution for calling, leading and attending the December 6 2023 nullified national governing council (NGC) meeting in Lilongwe.

In an exclusive interview which has aired on the national broadcaster MBC, Botomani said its unfortunate that DPP as a party has not learnt lessons and continues its failure to follow democratic principles.
He cited the current scenario where the Party leader Peter Mutharika has no regard for positions elected at the party convention and that he can at his will change any position holder in the party “That is strange, I know they claim its in their party constitution but its strange that those elected at the convention can easily be removed like that ” said Botomani.

Botomani said he has no regrets over the position that he took last year which led to his expulsion . He has since not joined any party
