The Northern Region TNM Super league outfit, Ekwendeni Hammers FC has changed its name to Mzuzu City Hammers FC.
Asked to clarify the reason behind the name change, the team’s General Secretary Benjamin Thole said the team relocated its operations from Ekwendeni to Mzuzu City hence the decision to change the name.
“The team relocated from Ekwendeni Township to Mzuzu City in 2019. We have been doing our operations for the past five years in Mzuzu. We hope the change will help our fan base to grow as people from the city will now own the team,” Thole said.
FAM Club Licencing Manager Casper Jangale said the team has been allowed to start using the new name after fulfilling Club Licensing requirements on changing club names.
“Mostly when changing a name, a club explains the reasons to receive the licence under the new name. However, it is difficult to change the name when the club has already received a new licence using the old name,” Jangale said.
Recently, Kawinga FC also announced the change of its name to CRECK Sporting Club.
