Malawi’s First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera on Tuesday commissioned Chiyola Community Day Secondary School,which has been constructed by Press Trust in the area of Paramount Chief Themba la Mathemba Chikulamayembe in Rumphi District.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Madame Monica Chakwera commended Press Trust for building the school, stating it will help reduce the shortage of learning space in the district. She emphasized the importance of promoting girls’ education, noting that learners in the area previously travelled long distances to access secondary school education.
Madame Chakwera urged girls to work hard and achieve their educational dreams. She requested Press Trust to build girls’ hostels on the campus. Additionally, she called upon stakeholders to join hands in completing the school’s construction, highlighting unfinished projects like laboratories.
The First Lady expressed gratitude to Press Trust for the school’s construction, emphasizing that human capital remains crucial for the country’s social development.
Paramount Chief Themba Chikulamayembe praised President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s vision for improving education commended the First Lady for initiating construction of community day schools in the area, including Jalira Secondary School, which will become a national school. He also acknowledged the Malawi Government’s water project, aimed at resolving water issues.
Member of Parliament Wadada Wiza Mkandawire and Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima also commended President Chakwera and Press Trust for the school’s construction. Kambauwa warned students against vandalism on school property.
