Lilongwe police have arrested four individuals, including Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) MP, Joseph Mwanamveka, former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) CEO Collins Magalasi, former Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Lloyd Muhara, and former secretary to Treasury Cliff Chiunda.
Mwanamvekha’s lawyer, Kalekeni Kaphale, has expressed concerns over the charges, seeking clarification on certain aspects before the trial commences.
According to reports, Mwanamvekha’s arrest is linked to allegations of attempting to sabotage the Salima Sugar Company’s operations. According to Kaphale, Mwanamveka and Chiunda are currently being held at Area 3 police station, while Muhara and Magalasi are giving statements to fiscal police at Area 6.
Kaphale suspects that the arrests are related to issues concerning the Greenbelt Initiative.
National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya is yet to comment on the developments.
