Four people have been arrested in Chiradzulu for being suspected to have connected electricity illegally.
Chiradzulu Police public relations officer Cosmas Kagulo has confirmed the arrest and identified the suspects as Robert Hannock aged 33 from Nkhukuteni village Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre, Chifundo Chasweka aged 30 from Kandeu village Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi, Bathlomew Gowero aged 33 from Namakoka village Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba and Arnold Katunga aged 31 from Ntaja village Traditional Authority Dambe in Neno.
He said the malpractice happened at Namadzi trading centre in the district.
“It is reported that ESCOM personnels were on system upgrading operation within Namadzi trading centre. When they reached a newly constructed lodge at the trading center, they found that the meter which was supposed to be on the pole was rather placed on a wall,” Kagulo said.
He said this made the personnels of illegal connection, upon questioning the owner, he mentioned Robert Hannock who is the electrician as the one who made the connections.
“The matter was reported to the police and upon interrogating the electrician, he revealed that he was supplied with the ESCOM equipment by Chasweka, an ex-employee of ESCOM who also reaveled that Bathomeo Gowero provided wire and meter for the lodge while Anold Katunga provided wire for another house, but both of them works as Linesmen at Zomba Escom office, ” said Kagulo.
The suspects are expected to appear before court to answer the charges leveled against them.
