Sabina Thom’s 91st-minute goal secured Malawi national women’s team, the Scorchers victory, as the team beat the defending champions, Zambia 2-1 at Lucas Moripe Stadium in South Africa to win HollywoodBets Cosafa Women’s Championship.

Asimenye Simwaka put the Scorchers in the lead in the 34th minute but Zambia equalized in the 84th minute through Agness Phiri from the penalty spot.

Just when everybody thought the match was going to end into penalties, Thom had other thoughts as she scored in the added time with a powerful shot inside the penalty box to help the Scorchers clinch their first ever title.

Speaking after the historical win, Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili said he was excited to have guided the team to win the title and thanked people that supported the team throughout the tournament.

“It wasn’t easy, I am very excited that we have won the Cosafa Cup. Sabina Thom’s winning goal which came in the additional time came from God.

” We conceded the penalty towards the end of the Match but I told the girls to work hard and got the second goal. Here we go now, the Cup is ours,” he said.

Malawi has finished the tournament without a defeat as they won all their matches in the tournament.
